30th Anniversary Weekend Come & Sing

Calling all previous members!

Join us to celebrate Glasgow Chamber Choir’s 30th Anniversary on Saturday 23rd November for a come and sing day at St Margaret’s Episcopal Church, Glasgow.

The day will start from 10.30am, followed by some singing sessions and lunch (provided by current GCC members), finishing up by 5pm. We expect some will continue on with drinks nearby afterwards!

Upcoming Concerts in 2022

Glasgow Chamber Choir are delighted to be returning to a programme of concerts for 2022.

We start with a concert of beautiful pieces in our ‘Flight of Angels’ concert on 26th March in Glasgow, featuring pieces by Mozart, Haydn, Tavener, Byrd and others.

And plans are afoot for a summer concert this June – more details to follow soon, or sign up to our mailing list for the latest information.

2019 – 2020 Season Launched

We are delighted to welcome you to Glasgow Chamber Choir’s 25th Anniversary Season!

We have an exciting year ahead with concerts in Glasgow, Ayrshire, Linlithgow, Renfrewshire and the Netherlands.

Our season begins on Saturday 23rd November in St Margaret’s Episcopal Church, Newlands, with A European Odyssey – a musical journey around Europe. From the joyful setting of a Galician lovesong from north-west Spain, through a spell-binding evocation of a night of snow, Un Soir de Neige by French composer Poulenc, to Jaako Mantyjarvi’s emotive cantata dedicated to all those who perished in the Estonia maritime disaster of 1994, it promises to be an emotional evening. The programme also contains music from Croatia, the Faeroes, and Scotland.

This year our Christmas concert will be held in Craigie Symington Parish Church, one of Scotland’s oldest and most beautiful churches – a perfect setting to celebrate the festive season. After a varied selection of Christmas music, we invite you to join us for a glass of mulled wine and a mince pie.

In our 25th season, we are delighted to celebrate our long-standing relationship with St Joris Kamerkoor from the Netherlands. In March we will travel to the Netherlands to join our Dutch friends for a wonderful weekend of music-making, and they will come to Scotland in April, when we look forward to performing Bruckner’s Mass in E minor in St Michael’s Parish Church, Linlithgow. We finish our anniversary season with summer concerts in St Bride’s Epsicopal Church in the West End of Glasgow, and in Houston and Killellan Kirk, Renfrewshire.

Another exciting musical journey lies ahead and we very much hope that you will join us for all or part of it!

GCC 2018 – 2019 Programme Published

This 2018-2019 season brings new repertoire and new challenges to Glasgow Chamber Choir – and my experience is that these bring out the best in our singers.

Although our first concert features a classic work of the choral repertoire, Mozart’s great Requiem, we have chosen to perform a different edition from the usual one which was completed by Süssmayr after Mozart’s death. We will be performing Robert Levin’s edition, which is subtly different from that of Süssmayr, and even those familiar with this great work will find something new to listen for in our performance. We complement this with other works associated with Vienna – three choral settings by Brahms, and the motet Friede auf Erden by Arnold Schoenberg.

Later in November, we take part in a truly unique event – a performance of Warhorse, narrated by the author, Michael Morpurgo, with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra with specially arranged music and video artwork.

Passiontide sees us returning to James MacMillan, and a performance of his Seven Last Words from the Cross, 25 years after its composition in 1993, and now itself a contemporary classic.
In June we return to the delightful medieval Crichton Collegiate Church, near Pathhead in Midlothian for a concert of summer music, which will also be performed in Glasgow in the lovely setting of St Bride’s Church.

All in all, there is a great deal to look forward to this season, and I hope to see you soon at one of our concerts.

BBC Radio 4 Sunday Worship for Holocaust Memorial – iPlayer

Listen to Glasgow Chamber Choir and our patron mezzo Karen Cargill on BBC Radio 4’s Sunday Worship live on iPlayer.

The service was recorded in St Margaret’s Episcopal Church in Newlands, Glasgow, and presented by Canon Scott Robertson. The theme is ‘The Power of Words’, reflecting on Holocaust Memorial Day.

The music sang includes that by Maurice Duruflé (the Kyrie from his Requiem) and Michael Tippett (Go Down Moses, from his oratorio A Child of Our Time), whilst Karen Cargill sang Antonin Dvorak’s setting of Psalm 137 (By the Waters of Babylon) from his Biblical Songs. Organist Christopher Nickol also performed a movement of Mendelssohn’s Fourth Sonata to conclude the service.

2017 – 2018 Season Brochure published!

Our wonderful new season brochure has arrived!

Every new season with Glasgow Chamber Choir brings new challenges and opportunities. We start the season with an unusual combination of voices with solo cello, giving us the opportunity to perform an exciting new piece, Night Flight, by Scottish composer Cecilia McDowall. Alongside this we will perform John Tavener’s haunting Svyati which also pairs choir with cello. This autumnal programme develops the French theme with Duruflé’s Requiem and Ravel’s Trois Chansons.

We are delighted to be sharing our Christmas concert with East Dunbartonshire Children’s Chorus and Youth Choir once again. This concert will be conducted by our talented Assistant Conductor Leon Reimer. In March we will be tackling one of Sir James MacMillan’s recent choral works, the powerful Stabat Mater written in 2015 and premiered in 2016 by The Sixteen. This moving work will be performed with a small string orchestra in the wonderful setting of St Aloysius Church in Glasgow,

In June we are excited to be taking part in the first mini-festival organised by Milngavie Music Club in Bearsden Cross Church. The festival aims to create a platform for emerging young artists, and we will be joined in this programme by a young solo singer. I hope you agree that this makes for a wonderful season of choral music-making, and look forward to welcoming you at a concert soon!

Associate Conductor Appointed

Following our advertisement to take on an associate/student conductor forthe 2016 – 2017 term, we auditioned four potential candidates. The unanimous view from the feedback from the choir was that Leon Reimer should be appointed to take this role for the season, and we very much look forward to working with him over the team. Look at for him at a number of our concerts!
