Scarlatti’s virtuosic, ten-voiced setting of the ‘Stabat Mater’ is one of the jewels in the baroque era and his best known choral work. In contrast, Sir James MacMillan’s hard-hitting ‘Cantos Sagrados’ offers a contemporary view of the passion narrative, combining traditional Latin texts with modern Latin American poetry.
