SUMMARY:A European Odyssey
DESCRIPTION:Our November concert takes you on a musical journey around Europe\, from a joyful setting of a Galician lovesong from north east Spain\, to a spell-binding evocation of a night of snow\, Un Soir de Neige by the French composer Poulenc. \nFrom Finland we bring you Jakko Mäntyjärvi’s cantata Canticum Calamitatis Maritimae written in 1997 and dedicated to the memory of more than 850 people who perished in the shipwreck of the car ferry Estonia in 1994. The cantata is a setting of verses from Psalm 107 alongside news reports of the disaster in Latin\, combined with words from the requiem mass. \nAt this season of remembrance\, we also include mass settings from Scotland and Spain: Kenneth Leighton’s beautiful mass for double choir first performed in 1966\, and parts of Francisco Guerrero’s Missa Sancta et Immaculata\, written 400 years earlier in 1566. \nThe concert promises to be an emotional journey through time and space. \nTickets:\nTickets £10 Adults / £5 Students\, available online at: https://glasgowchamberchoir.ticketlight.co.uk/

SUMMARY:Sir James MacMillan Stabat Mater
DESCRIPTION:Buy tickets online here\nStabat Mater Dolorosa is considered one of the greatest Latin hymns of all time\, dating back to around the 13th century and often translated “the sorrowful mother was standing”. Set to music by large number of prominent composers\, here the Glasgow Chamber Choir are performing two beautifully contrasting settings from the 16th and the 21st centuries accompanied by a chamber orchestra. \nMacMillan \nFew living composers communicate with the emotional directness of Sir James MacMillan and his Stabat Mater received rave reviews at its premiere in 2016. For MacMillan ‘beauty is at the heart of our Christian faith’ and the Stabat Mater is profoundly shaped by his beliefs. \nThe piece sets the 20 verses of the Stabat Mater in four movements\, portraying the human relationship of mother and child\, alongside Mary’s role as intercessor between man and God. \n“Both sides of MacMillan are to be found here\, the devotional and the painter of bold dramatic canvases – the former in the ethereal writing for solo and ensemble voices\, the latter in the lacerating blows and feverish anxieties depicted in the string ensemble.”  Financial Times (2016) \nThis is an important musical challenge for the choir\, and a wonderful opportunity for Glasgow audiences to hear this powerful piece performed in the beautiful setting of St Aloysius Church. \nListen to Sir James MacMillan in this behind the scenes clip during the recording with The Sixteen and the Britten Sinfonia: \n\nPalestrina \nPalestrina was the most important composer of 16th century Italy.  His monumental Stabat Mater for unaccompanied double choir was composed at the end of the 16th century for Pope Gregory XIV and became one of the most admired pieces of music in the Pope’s private chapel. \nTickets – £14 Adults\, £7 Students\nBuy tickets online here

SUMMARY:Glasgow Chamber Choir with String Ensemble
DESCRIPTION:With the long-light time of year approaching\, come and fill an afternoon/evening listening to the intricate beauty of rich choral works by musical masters  J S Bach\, Buxtehude\, Michael Haydn and Mozart. \nJ S Bach’s motets\, ‘Furchte dich nicht’ (Do not fear) and ‘Kom Jesu Kom’ are most likely settings of biblical passages and poetry for funeral/memorial services. Both are written for double choir. Using highly complex structuring of musical material Bach takes us on journeys through dark despair with pressing chromatics\, into high realms of harmonic resolution\, hope and purpose. \nJ S Bach was a great admirer of Dietrich Buxtehude\, whose musical career led him from Denmark to Lubeck. Indeed\, Bach walked 200 miles from Arnstadt to Lubeck to meet and learn from Buxtehude. In these cantatas we can see the inspiring musical influences and ideas that Buxtehude uses to clothe with expressive warmth the texts that inspired him. \nMichael Haydn\, younger brother of Joseph\, takes us into the classical period. These liturgical choral works are little gems. Michael’s compositions fall in the shadow of his elder brother’s\, but Joseph regarded Michael’s musical skills highly\, even considering them superior to his own. \nMozart’s miniatures can’t fail to delight with their filigree interplay of musical lines. \nWe look forward to your joining us for this musical feast in the fine setting of St Andrew’s Catholic Church\, Glasgow on Sun 5th June at 3pm. \nTickets are available on the door or online from Eventbrite:

SUMMARY:BBC SSO - Hear and Now
DESCRIPTION:The Glasgow Chamber Choir are joining the BBC SSO again under the direction of Martyn Brabbins to perform the UK premiere of James MacMillan’s Hodie Puer Nascitur in the Glasgow City Halls on the 27th February at 8pm. \nMore details are available here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/events/eh4v2m \n“Musical inspiration comes in many forms. The late John McCabe was transfixed by the pattern of sounds coming from a Japanese amusement arcade\, which gave rise to his ‘musical entertainment’ Joybox. Sally Beamish’s Second Cello Concerto takes its cue from the wanderings of Robert Cohen’s grandfather and weaves together elements of Polish and South African folksongs with migratory birdcalls. Sir James MacMillan’s faith remains as central to his writing as ever; here his motet for ensemble and chorus is given its UK Premiere by the Glasgow Chamber Choir. Anthony Payne’s dynamic and monumental Time’s Arrow from 1990\, meanwhile\, is nothing less than an orchestral evocation of ‘The Big Bang’\, acclaimed as “a work of stunning confidence with exceptional clarity of thought and argument.” Martyn Brabbins conducts the BBC SSO in this concert for BBC Radio 3’s Hear and Now\, which brings together works by four of the leading British composers of our time.” \nTickets: FREE* (unreserved seating) limited to 2 tickets per application (not recommended for young children) – available from Monday 16 November 2015.\n*£1.00 online and £1.50 telephone venue booking fees apply.
