SUMMARY:Seven Last Words from the Cross
DESCRIPTION:Join Glasgow Chamber Choir in the atmospheric surroundings of Glasgow Cathedral for an evening of compelling choral music\, centred on Sir James MacMillan’s Seven Last Words from the Cross\, performed with a string orchestra. \nWidely admired as one of MacMillan’s finest achievements\, Seven Last Words from the Cross is an absorbing and moving concert work. Written as a sequence of seven short movements\, the cantata reflects on Christ’s final utterances\, shaping them into a dramatic and emotionally charged musical journey. \n“…probably MacMillan’s masterpiece… the maturity in this composition is astounding: the tonal structure of the seven settings\, harmony which can be spare or lush without ever being overwritten\, an inexorable sense of the drama in the text\, the balance between voice and strings.” The Guardian \nThe programme also includes J. S. Bach’s Jesu\, meine Freude\, a landmark of choral writing that ranges from calm\, flowing lines to more animated\, rhythmic writing. This is contrasted with the spacious\, flowing textures of O bone Jesu\, scored in 19 parts\, by the Scottish Renaissance composer Robert Carver. \nHeard together\, the programme draws connections across five centuries of choral music \nTickets are available on the door or online at glasgowchamberchoir.ticketlight.co.uk

SUMMARY:In the beginning
DESCRIPTION:Join Glasgow Chamber Choir for an evening of vibrant and varied music inspired by the soundscape of the Americas. At the centre of the programme is Aaron Copland’s In the Beginning – a dramatic and rarely-heard setting of the Creation story\, blending rich choral writing with a solo mezzo-soprano voice and Copland’s unmistakable musical colour. \nAlongside this\, the concert takes listeners on a musical journey across the continents. From Mexico’s colonial past\, Juan de Padilla’s Missa Ego flos campi offers the intricate beauty and serenity of Renaissance polyphony\, while Heitor Villa-Lobos brings a burst of rhythmic energy and Brazilian warmth. Eric Whitacre’s luminous harmonies capture the spirit of contemporary American choral writing\, and Herbert Howells’ Take him\, earth\, for cherishing – composed in memory of President John F. Kennedy – adds a touch of heartfelt reflection from across the Atlantic. \nCome and hear a concert that celebrates the diversity and creativity of choral music across the Americas – from Renaissance Mexico to modern-day Manhattan – all in the resonant surroundings of St Bride’s Episcopal Church. \nDirector:Michael Bawtree\nSaturday 22 November at 7.30pmSt Bride’s Episcopal Church\, 69 Hyndland Road\, Glasgow G12 9UXTickets: £15 Adults | £5 Students available on the door or via ticketlight

SUMMARY:Remembrance-tide
DESCRIPTION:As the season of remembrance approaches\, Glasgow Chamber Choir presents an afternoon of thoughtful and expressive choral music\, exploring themes of reflection\, memory\, and peace. \nUnder the direction of Michael Bawtree\, the programme features three contrasting responses to loss and remembrance. Herbert Howells’ Take him\, earth\, for cherishing\, written in memory of President John F. Kennedy\, is one of the most deeply felt and radiant works of the twentieth-century choral repertoire. Jaakko Mäntyjärvi’s Canticum Calamitatis Marinorum (“Song of the Sea Disaster”) offers a strikingly modern soundscape of compassion and humanity\, composed in response to the sinking of the MS Estonia. And in Walford Davies’ A Short Requiem\, we hear a more intimate and traditional voice – music that finds serenity in the midst of remembrance. \nJoin us for an hour of beautiful and contemplative choral music – a chance to pause and listen\, as voices and harmonies resonate in this season of reflection. \nSunday 9 November at 3.30pmSt Margaret’s Episcopal Church\, Kilmarnock Road\, Glasgow G43 2DS\nFree entry – with retiring collection

Buy online at glasgowchamberchoir.ticketlight.co.uk\, or on the door. \n  \nMode details on the composers: \nRebecca Clarke (1886-1969) is an interesting example: born in London\, with an American father and German mother\, she showed early talent as a musician\, composing from an early age. She entered the Royal Academy of Music in 1903 but was withdrawn by her abusive  father after her violin teacher proposed to her. Later she attended the Royal College of Music where she was a composition student of Stanford. Stanford encouraged her to change from violin to viola\, and she went on to become one of the leading viola players of her age. In a link with another of our composers in this concert\, she formed a singing group at the RCM to study and perform the work of Palestrina. This group was directed by Ralph Vaughan Williams. She went on to become one of the first professional female orchestral musicians. Generally regarded as one of the leading women composers of the inter-war years\, she commented ‘I would sooner be regarded as a 16th rate composer than be judged as if there were one kind of musical art for men and another for women.’ Music when soft voices die dates from around 1907\, and shows the influence of her teachers\, Stanford and Parry. \nJudith Weir\, born in 1954\, studied at Cambridge University and from 2014 to 2024 was Master of the Queen’s (and then King’s) Music\, the first woman to hold this position. She is a prolific composer of opera and orchestral works. Of Scottish parentage\, she was Lecturer in Music at Glasgow University from 1979-1982. Love bade me welcome\,  a setting of text by George Herbert\, was composed in 1994 to celebrate the 500th anniversary of Aberdeen University. \nJudith Bingham is an English composer\, born in 1952. She studied composition and singing at the Royal Academy of Music and was a member of the BBC Singers from 1983-1995. Her piece  The Drowned Lovers was written in 1998\, and she stipulates that it must be followed in performance by Stanford’s The Blue Bird\, the harmonies of which form the basis of her piece. It was first performed as part of the Three Choirs Festival in 2000. \nSally Beamish\, born in 1956\, was like Rebecca Clarke a viola player\, having studied at the Royal Northern College of Music\, before focusing on composition. She spent many years living in Scotland\, and Good Wish was written as a gift to the Scottish composer James MacMillan for his 60th birthday. It was first performed at the Cumnock Tryst Festival in 2019\, and is a setting of a poem from the Carmina Gadelica\, the collection of Gaelic songs and blessings collected by Alexander Carmichael between 1860 and 1909. \nJennifer Martin studied music at Edinburgh University\, and gained an MPhil in composition in 1996. She has held many positions in music education and run many creative education projects in different settings. Knots was commissioned by Glasgow Chamber Choir for its Glasgow Songbook to celebrate Glasgow’s hosting of the Commonwealth Games in 2014. Knots is a setting of a poem by Thomas Campbell \, Freedom and Love\, written in 1707.

SUMMARY:Scottish Influences - BBC SSO
DESCRIPTION:An all-night party\, a northern sunrise – join us for a life-affirming celebration of music made in Scotland. Singers from across the Central Belt come together to perform modern sacred masterpieces by Sir James MacMillan\, and Errollyn Wallen salutes her ancestors in a wordless song of survival and freedom. We raise a toast to the late Lyell Creswell – the irrepressible\, utterly individual New Zealand composer who made Edinburgh his home\, and whose extraordinary Third Piano Concerto receives its European premiere from Danny Driver. And then we’re off to Orkney\, where Peter Maxwell Davies is keeping a welcome – no spoilers\, but let’s just say that it gets lively… \n\n\n\n\n\nPART OF\nBBC SSO 2024-25 Season \n\n\n\nProgramme\nErrollyn Wallen\nMighty River(15 mins) \nPeter Maxwell Davies\nLullabye for Lucy\, op. 99(6 mins) \nSir James MacMillan\nHodie Puer Nascitur(7 mins) \nLyell Cresswell\nPiano Concerto No.3(20 mins)\nEuropean Premiere \nINTERVAL\nSir James MacMillan\nTu es Petrus(4 mins) \nLyell Cresswell\nPater Columba(7 mins) \nPeter Maxwell Davies\nAn Orkney Wedding\, with Sunrise(13 mins) \n\n  \n\n\nPerformers\n\nDanny Driver \npiano\n\n\n\nMichael Bawtree \nconductor\n\n\n\nMartyn Brabbins \nconductor\n\n\n\nGlasgow Chamber Choir \nchoir\n\n\n\nEdinburgh University Chamber Choir \nchoir\n\n\nBBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra

SUMMARY:St John Passion - Linlithgow
DESCRIPTION:Glasgow Chamber Choir & Chamber Orchestra\nDIRECTOR – Michael Bawtree \nGlasgow Chamber Choir is delighted to be presenting this concert\, the first time we have sung this amazing work since 2007. \nAlthough it is now 300 years since the first performance of JS Bach’s St John Passion in Leipzig in 1724\, it has lost none of its power to convey the drama and emotion of the story of the passion of Christ as told in St John’s gospel. \nThe narrative is sung by the Evangelist\, interspersed with choral items and arias which reflect the action. The choir becomes the crowds of scribes and Pharisees\, the public\, chief priests and soldiers at different points in the drama\, but also sing chorales throughout which reflect on the action and its meaning. There are also eloquent arias for solo voices which appeal directly to the emotions of the listener. SUMMARY:Hail bright Cecilia (Edinburgh)
DESCRIPTION:Our concert in November celebrates St Cecilia\, the patron saint of music and musicians\, whose feast day falls on 22 November. \nNot surprisingly\, she has inspired many composers\, and we will perform music celebrating St Cecilia from across the centuries\, from Peter Philips’ Cecilia Virgo composed in the early 17th century up to the present day with Cecilia MacDowall’s Cecilia\, busy as a bee\, and James MacMillan’s Cecilia Virgo. Benjamin Britten was himself born on St Cecilia’s Day and his Hymn to St Cecilia is a well-loved setting of poems by WH Auden. \nWe mark the 400 years since the death of William Byrd\, with his Mass for five voices\, written during the reign of Elizabeth I\, for use in secret by Roman Catholics who were forbidden to celebrate the catholic mass at that time. The final piece in our programme is James MacMillan’s powerful setting of Psalm 51\, Miserere which was first performed in 2009. \nTickets available online at Glasgow Chamber Choir Tickets (ticketlight.co.uk) and at the door.

SUMMARY:Bruckner Mass in E Minor (Glasgow)
DESCRIPTION:After previous successful exchanges in 2011\, 2014 and 2017\, the St Joris Kammerkoor come to Glasgow for the fourth time in April 2023\, celebrating twelve years of joint musical projects between Scotland and the Netherlands. \nSt Mary’s Cathedral\, on Great Western Road\, provides a wonderful setting for Bruckner’s monumental Mass in E Minor for double choir\, accompanied by brass and woodwind players from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. Bruckner wrote this mass in 1866 on the occasion of the construction of the votive chapel of the new cathedral in Linz; the mass sounded for the first time in 1869\, in the open air and under the direction of the composer. \nIn addition to this mass\, the joint choirs will also perform two arrangements of songs by Mahler for eight and sixteen part choir by Clytus Gottwald (1925-2023). Gottwald’s choral arrangements of Urlicht\, from Das Knaben Wunderhorn\, and Ich bin der Welt abhanden kommen\, are characterized as recreating the beautiful sounds of the instruments in question using the unique qualities of the human voice (Clytus Gottwald passed away on January 18 2023). \nAs a contrast to all these late 19th-century choral works\, the choirs will perform James MacMillan’s ‘Who shall separate us’\, written and first performed for the late Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral service. \nOur concert also takes place at the time of Shakespeare’s birthday\, and 2023 marks the 400th anniversary of the first publication of Shakespeare’s plays.  We celebrate this with Vaughan Williams’s settings of three Shakespeare songs. \nTickets: £15 Adults / £8 Students\, available on the door or online at: Glasgow Chamber Choir Tickets (ticketlight.co.uk)

SUMMARY:Bruckner Mass in E Minor (Amersfoort)
DESCRIPTION:After previous successful exchanges in 2011\, 2014 and 2017\, the Glasgow Chamber Choir come to the Netherlands for the fourth time in March 2020 for joint concerts with the St. Joris Chamber Choir. At the last minute we unfortunately had to cancel the performances in Amersfoort and Amsterdam and later in Glasgow for the well-known reason in 2020. This\, of course\, to the great disappointment of all involved.However\, we quickly decided that ‘postponement’ is different from ‘cancellation’ and that is why we have re-programmed them for the spring of 2023. \nThe monumental Messe in e-moll by Anton Bruckner for eight-part choir and fifteen woodwind and brass instruments is again the main part of the programme. Bruckner wrote this mass in 1866 on the occasion of the construction of the votive chapel of the new cathedral in Linz; the mass sounded for the first time in 1869\, in the open air and under the direction of the composer. \nIn addition to this mass\, three transcriptions for eight to no fewer than sixteen voice choir by Clytus Gottwald (1925-2023) of songs by Gustav Mahler will be performed. Gottwald’s choral arrangements are also characterized as recreating the beautiful sounds of the instruments in question to the unique qualities of the human voice (Clytus Gottwald passed away on January 18 at the blessed age of 97). \nAnd as a contrast to all these late 19th-century choral works\, the choirs each perform a work by the Scottish composer James MacMillan (*1959): the St. Joris Chamber Choir with its setting on Psalm 51 ‘Miserere’ from 2009 (which also fits well during this Lent) and the Glasgow Chamber Choir with the composition ‘Who shall separate us’ (written last year for and performed during the funeral ceremony of Queen Elisabeth II). \nIn anticipation of the joint performances in Glasgow next April\, the GCC has also scheduled Ralph Vaughan William’s ‘Three Shakespeare Songs’. \n The arrangements for wind instruments by our choir member Frits Gombert on orchestral works by Anton Bruckner provide a few instrumental interludes. \nThe complete program: \nAnton Bruckner/arr. Fritz Gombert:\nMarch in D minor (WAB 96)\nFrom Drei Orchesterstücke (WAB 97): No. 1 – Moderato and No. 3 – Andante con moto \nJames MacMillan – Miserere (*) \nRalph Vaughan Williams – Three Shakespeare Songs (**) \n James MacMillan – Who shall separate us (**) \nGustav Mahler/Clytus Gottwald:\nfrom: Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen: nr. 4 ‘Die zwei blauen Augen von meinem Schatz’\nfrom: Des Knaben Wunderhorn: no. 13 ‘Urlicht’ from: Rückertlieder: nr. 4 ‘Ich bin der Welt abhanden komommen’ \nAnton Bruckner – Messe in e-moll (WAB 27)\, for eight-part choir and winds:\n \n(*) SJKK only \n(**) GCC only

SUMMARY:Scott of the Antarctic - BBC SSO
DESCRIPTION:BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra \nScott of the Antarctic \nMusic by Vaughan Williams \nElizabeth Watts\, soprano \nWomen of the Glasgow Chamber Choir \nMartyn Brabbins\, conductor \nScott of the Antarctic (1948) is justly famous for its score by Ralph Vaughan Williams who later turned elements into his Seventh Symphony. Richly imaginative\, the music captures the barren beauty of the Antarctic with icy writing for the strings\, penguin-centred escapades for the brass\, and an eerie\, other-worldly sequence for women’s chorus and soprano. Marking 150 years since the composer’s birth\, Martyn Brabbins conducts Vaughan Williams’s extraordinary masterpiece\, a cinematic experience that’ll give you chills – in every sense. \nScott of the Antarctic Live in Concert is presented by Big Screen Live in association with StudioCanal and generous funds provided by the Vaughan Williams Charitable Trust.

SUMMARY:Pizzetti - Messa di Requiem
DESCRIPTION:Our autumn concert has a distinctly Italian flavour\, with a programme of sacred music from composers\, some of whom are better known for their operatic work. \nIldebrando Pizzetti\, an Italian composer little known outside Italy\, wrote his beautiful Messa di Requiem in 1922. It is steeped in the tradition of Gregorian chant\, woven into a modern web of sound. \nThe rest of the programme continues the Italian theme\, with three sacred pieces by Verdi: his Ave Maria and Pater Noster for mixed voices\, and his Laudi Alla Vergine Maria for female voices. While Verdi is best known for his operas\, he turned to writing sacred choral music later in life\, and these are three of his finest. \nOur final Italian piece\, Monteverdi’s Cantate Domino takes us back 200 years\, and brings us into the glorious sound world of St Mark’s in Venice in the 17th century. \nTickets available online from glasgowchamberchoir.ticketlight.co.uk and on the door.

SUMMARY:Midsummer Songs & Sonnets
DESCRIPTION:As we approach the summer equinox\, join us for a concert of beautiful music fit for a summer’s evening. \nOur midsummer concert brings together joyful motets from Bach and Schutz from the 16th and 17th centuries with music from more recent times by British jazz pianist George Shearing\, and American composers Eric Whitacre and Morten Lauridsen. After two years of lockdown\, choir members have chosen some of their favourite pieces from the GCC library\, and the all-time favourite Faire is the Heaven by William H Harris also finds a place in the programme. \nBach’s motets are both a challenge and a joy for any choir. Der Geist hilt unser Schwachheit auf is written for double choir and was composed in 1729. It sets words from St Paul’s letter to the Romans\, as well as the hymn Komm Hieliger Geist\, Herre Gott by Martin Luther. There is some dispute as to whether Lobet den Herrn\, Alle Heiden is by Bach\, but it is a fine motet\, and sets words from Psalm 117. \nHeinrich Schutz’s joyful motet Jauchzetdem Herren (Shout for joy to the Lord\, all the earth) was composed 100 years before the Bach motets\, in 1619 and is a setting of words from Psalm 100. It is set for two choirs which echo one another throughout. \nGeorge Shearing composed Songs and Sonnets from Shakespeare in 2001\, and they are popular settings of well-known texts in a jazz idiom. Eric Whitacre’s settings are full of romance and luminosity\, creating a web of sound. Lauridsen was born in 1943 and is best known for his choral works. His set of Nocturnes contain settings of poems by Rilke\, Neruda and Agee. \nTickets: Adults £10 / Student £5\, online or on the door. \nhttps://glasgowchamberchoir.ticketlight.co.uk/ \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Flight of Angels - music for inner peace
DESCRIPTION:After two years with very little singing\, we are delighted to bring you a varied concert of music from across several centuries. \nByrd’s luminous Five-Part Mass was written in the late 16th century and is considered a masterpiece of choral writing. Moving forward a century we bring you music by Johann Ludwig Bach\, a third cousin of the great JS Bach. \nFrom the classical period we will perform a selection of less well-known pieces by Mozart and Haydn\, and by other members of the talented Mozart and Haydn families. \nAnd finally\, moving into the 20th century we have the haunting music of John Tavener. His Song for Athene\, which incorporates words from Hamlet (May flights of angels sing you to your rest) is best known for having been sung at the funeral of Princess Diana in 1997. Tavener’s beautiful and austere Funeral Ikos written in 1981 has its origins in Russian chant. \nTickets: Adults £10 / Student £5\, online or on the door. \nhttps://glasgowchamberchoir.ticketlight.co.uk/

SUMMARY:Bruckner Mass in E minor
DESCRIPTION:In April we link up for the fourth time with our Dutch partner choir\, St Joris Kamerkoor from the town of Amersfoort\, to present a powerful programme of choral music by Bruckner and Mahler in St Michael’s Church in Linlithgow. \nSt Michael’s is one of the largest and most historic parish churches in Scotland and will be a perfect setting for Bruckner’s monumental Mass in E Minor for double choir\, accompanied by brass and woodwind players from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. The joint choirs will also perform two arrangements of songs by Mahler for eight and sixteen voices\, Urlicht\, from Das Knaben Wunderhorn\, and Ich bin der Welt abhanden kommen. \nAlongside these 19th century works\, each choir will sing repertoire by contemporary composers: Glasgow Chamber Choir will sing the powerful cantata written by Finnish composer Mantyjarvi to commemorate the sinking of the Estonia in 1997\, while St Joris Kamerkoor perform James MacMillan’s Miserere. \nMore details including tickets to follow. \n  \n
