SUMMARY:Summer Concert 2025 - Glasgow
DESCRIPTION:Glasgow Chamber Choir invites you to an evening of choral music that drifts between stillness and flight. At the heart of the programme is The Blue Bird by Charles Villiers Stanford — a work of exquisite restraint and luminous beauty\, evoking the silent arc of a bird over water.  \nAlongside this\, the serene polyphony of Palestrina offers a glimpse into the clarity and poise of Renaissance choral tradition. \nIn dialogue with these classical voices are works by three leading female composers of our time: Judith Weir\, Judith Bingham\, and Sally Beamish. Their music brings contemporary colour\, poetry\, and emotional depth — expanding the concert’s theme of reflection\, air\, and light. \nSATURDAY 7th June @7pm – Kelvinside Hillhead Parish Church\, Glasgow \nSUNDAY 8th June @4pm – Crichton Collegiate Church\, Midlothian \nDirector: Michael Bawtree \nTickets £15 Adults / £5 Students. Buy online at glasgowchamberchoir.ticketlight.co.uk\, or on the door. \n  \nMode details on the composers: \nRebecca Clarke (1886-1969) is an interesting example: born in London\, with an American father and German mother\, she showed early talent as a musician\, composing from an early age. She entered the Royal Academy of Music in 1903 but was withdrawn by her abusive  father after her violin teacher proposed to her. Later she attended the Royal College of Music where she was a composition student of Stanford. Stanford encouraged her to change from violin to viola\, and she went on to become one of the leading viola players of her age. In a link with another of our composers in this concert\, she formed a singing group at the RCM to study and perform the work of Palestrina. This group was directed by Ralph Vaughan Williams. She went on to become one of the first professional female orchestral musicians. Generally regarded as one of the leading women composers of the inter-war years\, she commented ‘I would sooner be regarded as a 16th rate composer than be judged as if there were one kind of musical art for men and another for women.’ Music when soft voices die dates from around 1907\, and shows the influence of her teachers\, Stanford and Parry. \nJudith Weir\, born in 1954\, studied at Cambridge University and from 2014 to 2024 was Master of the Queen’s (and then King’s) Music\, the first woman to hold this position. She is a prolific composer of opera and orchestral works. Of Scottish parentage\, she was Lecturer in Music at Glasgow University from 1979-1982. Love bade me welcome\,  a setting of text by George Herbert\, was composed in 1994 to celebrate the 500th anniversary of Aberdeen University. \nJudith Bingham is an English composer\, born in 1952. She studied composition and singing at the Royal Academy of Music and was a member of the BBC Singers from 1983-1995. Her piece  The Drowned Lovers was written in 1998\, and she stipulates that it must be followed in performance by Stanford’s The Blue Bird\, the harmonies of which form the basis of her piece. It was first performed as part of the Three Choirs Festival in 2000. \nSally Beamish\, born in 1956\, was like Rebecca Clarke a viola player\, having studied at the Royal Northern College of Music\, before focusing on composition. She spent many years living in Scotland\, and Good Wish was written as a gift to the Scottish composer James MacMillan for his 60th birthday. It was first performed at the Cumnock Tryst Festival in 2019\, and is a setting of a poem from the Carmina Gadelica\, the collection of Gaelic songs and blessings collected by Alexander Carmichael between 1860 and 1909. \nJennifer Martin studied music at Edinburgh University\, and gained an MPhil in composition in 1996. She has held many positions in music education and run many creative education projects in different settings. Knots was commissioned by Glasgow Chamber Choir for its Glasgow Songbook to celebrate Glasgow’s hosting of the Commonwealth Games in 2014. Knots is a setting of a poem by Thomas Campbell \, Freedom and Love\, written in 1707.

SUMMARY:Remembrance-tide
DESCRIPTION:As the season of remembrance approaches\, Glasgow Chamber Choir presents an afternoon of thoughtful and expressive choral music\, exploring themes of reflection\, memory\, and peace. \nUnder the direction of Michael Bawtree\, the programme features three contrasting responses to loss and remembrance. Herbert Howells’ Take him\, earth\, for cherishing\, written in memory of President John F. Kennedy\, is one of the most deeply felt and radiant works of the twentieth-century choral repertoire. Jaakko Mäntyjärvi’s Canticum Calamitatis Marinorum (“Song of the Sea Disaster”) offers a strikingly modern soundscape of compassion and humanity\, composed in response to the sinking of the MS Estonia. And in Walford Davies’ A Short Requiem\, we hear a more intimate and traditional voice – music that finds serenity in the midst of remembrance. \nJoin us for an hour of beautiful and contemplative choral music – a chance to pause and listen\, as voices and harmonies resonate in this season of reflection. \nSunday 9 November at 3.30pmSt Margaret’s Episcopal Church\, Kilmarnock Road\, Glasgow G43 2DS\nFree entry – with retiring collection

SUMMARY:In the beginning
DESCRIPTION:Join Glasgow Chamber Choir for an evening of vibrant and varied music inspired by the soundscape of the Americas. At the centre of the programme is Aaron Copland’s In the Beginning – a dramatic and rarely-heard setting of the Creation story\, blending rich choral writing with a solo mezzo-soprano voice and Copland’s unmistakable musical colour. \nAlongside this\, the concert takes listeners on a musical journey across the continents. From Mexico’s colonial past\, Juan de Padilla’s Missa Ego flos campi offers the intricate beauty and serenity of Renaissance polyphony\, while Heitor Villa-Lobos brings a burst of rhythmic energy and Brazilian warmth. Eric Whitacre’s luminous harmonies capture the spirit of contemporary American choral writing\, and Herbert Howells’ Take him\, earth\, for cherishing – composed in memory of President John F. Kennedy – adds a touch of heartfelt reflection from across the Atlantic. \nCome and hear a concert that celebrates the diversity and creativity of choral music across the Americas – from Renaissance Mexico to modern-day Manhattan – all in the resonant surroundings of St Bride’s Episcopal Church. \nDirector:Michael Bawtree\nSaturday 22 November at 7.30pmSt Bride’s Episcopal Church\, 69 Hyndland Road\, Glasgow G12 9UXTickets: £15 Adults | £5 Students available on the door or via ticketlight

SUMMARY:Seven Last Words from the Cross
DESCRIPTION:Join Glasgow Chamber Choir in the atmospheric surroundings of Glasgow Cathedral for an evening of compelling choral music\, centred on Sir James MacMillan’s Seven Last Words from the Cross\, performed with a string orchestra. \nWidely admired as one of MacMillan’s finest achievements\, Seven Last Words from the Cross is an absorbing and moving concert work. Written as a sequence of seven short movements\, the cantata reflects on Christ’s final utterances\, shaping them into a dramatic and emotionally charged musical journey. \n“…probably MacMillan’s masterpiece… the maturity in this composition is astounding: the tonal structure of the seven settings\, harmony which can be spare or lush without ever being overwritten\, an inexorable sense of the drama in the text\, the balance between voice and strings.” The Guardian \nThe programme also includes J. S. Bach’s Jesu\, meine Freude\, a landmark of choral writing that ranges from calm\, flowing lines to more animated\, rhythmic writing. This is contrasted with the spacious\, flowing textures of O bone Jesu\, scored in 19 parts\, by the Scottish Renaissance composer Robert Carver. \nHeard together\, the programme draws connections across five centuries of choral music \nTickets are available on the door or online at glasgowchamberchoir.ticketlight.co.uk
