DESCRIPTION:Our concert in November celebrates St Cecilia\, the patron saint of music and musicians\, whose feast day falls on 22 November. \nNot surprisingly\, she has inspired many composers\, and we will perform music celebrating St Cecilia from across the centuries\, from Peter Philips’ Cecilia Virgo composed in the early 17th century up to the present day with Cecilia MacDowall’s Cecilia\, busy as a bee\, and James MacMillan’s Cecilia Virgo. Benjamin Britten was himself born on St Cecilia’s Day and his Hymn to St Cecilia is a well-loved setting of poems by WH Auden. \nWe mark the 400 years since the death of William Byrd\, with his Mass for five voices\, written during the reign of Elizabeth I\, for use in secret by Roman Catholics who were forbidden to celebrate the catholic mass at that time. The final piece in our programme is James MacMillan’s powerful setting of Psalm 51\, Miserere which was first performed in 2009. \nTickets available online at Glasgow Chamber Choir Tickets (ticketlight.co.uk) and at the door.

SUMMARY:Bruckner Mass in E Minor (Glasgow)
DESCRIPTION:After previous successful exchanges in 2011\, 2014 and 2017\, the St Joris Kammerkoor come to Glasgow for the fourth time in April 2023\, celebrating twelve years of joint musical projects between Scotland and the Netherlands. \nSt Mary’s Cathedral\, on Great Western Road\, provides a wonderful setting for Bruckner’s monumental Mass in E Minor for double choir\, accompanied by brass and woodwind players from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. Bruckner wrote this mass in 1866 on the occasion of the construction of the votive chapel of the new cathedral in Linz; the mass sounded for the first time in 1869\, in the open air and under the direction of the composer. \nIn addition to this mass\, the joint choirs will also perform two arrangements of songs by Mahler for eight and sixteen part choir by Clytus Gottwald (1925-2023). Gottwald’s choral arrangements of Urlicht\, from Das Knaben Wunderhorn\, and Ich bin der Welt abhanden kommen\, are characterized as recreating the beautiful sounds of the instruments in question using the unique qualities of the human voice (Clytus Gottwald passed away on January 18 2023). \nAs a contrast to all these late 19th-century choral works\, the choirs will perform James MacMillan’s ‘Who shall separate us’\, written and first performed for the late Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral service. \nOur concert also takes place at the time of Shakespeare’s birthday\, and 2023 marks the 400th anniversary of the first publication of Shakespeare’s plays.  We celebrate this with Vaughan Williams’s settings of three Shakespeare songs. \nTickets: £15 Adults / £8 Students\, available on the door or online at: Glasgow Chamber Choir Tickets (ticketlight.co.uk)

DESCRIPTION:After previous successful exchanges in 2011\, 2014 and 2017\, the Glasgow Chamber Choir come to the Netherlands for the fourth time in March 2020 for joint concerts with the St. Joris Chamber Choir. At the last minute we unfortunately had to cancel the performances in Amersfoort and Amsterdam and later in Glasgow for the well-known reason in 2020. This\, of course\, to the great disappointment of all involved.However\, we quickly decided that ‘postponement’ is different from ‘cancellation’ and that is why we have re-programmed them for the spring of 2023.  \nThe monumental Messe in e-moll by Anton Bruckner for eight-part choir and fifteen woodwind and brass instruments is again the main part of the programme. Bruckner wrote this mass in 1866 on the occasion of the construction of the votive chapel of the new cathedral in Linz; the mass sounded for the first time in 1869\, in the open air and under the direction of the composer.  \nIn addition to this mass\, three transcriptions for eight to no fewer than sixteen voice choir by Clytus Gottwald (1925-2023) of songs by Gustav Mahler will be performed. Gottwald’s choral arrangements are also characterized as recreating the beautiful sounds of the instruments in question to the unique qualities of the human voice (Clytus Gottwald passed away on January 18 at the blessed age of 97).  \nAnd as a contrast to all these late 19th-century choral works\, the choirs each perform a work by the Scottish composer James MacMillan (*1959): the St. Joris Chamber Choir with its setting on Psalm 51 ‘Miserere’ from 2009 (which also fits well during this Lent) and the Glasgow Chamber Choir with the composition ‘Who shall separate us’ (written last year for and performed during the funeral ceremony of Queen Elisabeth II).  \nIn anticipation of the joint performances in Glasgow next April\, the GCC has also scheduled Ralph Vaughan William’s ‘Three Shakespeare Songs’. \n The arrangements for wind instruments by our choir member Frits Gombert on orchestral works by Anton Bruckner provide a few instrumental interludes.  \nThe complete program:  \nAnton Bruckner/arr. DESCRIPTION:BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra \nScott of the Antarctic \nMusic by Vaughan Williams \nElizabeth Watts\, soprano \nWomen of the Glasgow Chamber Choir \nMartyn Brabbins\, conductor \nScott of the Antarctic (1948) is justly famous for its score by Ralph Vaughan Williams who later turned elements into his Seventh Symphony. Richly imaginative\, the music captures the barren beauty of the Antarctic with icy writing for the strings\, penguin-centred escapades for the brass\, and an eerie\, other-worldly sequence for women’s chorus and soprano. Marking 150 years since the composer’s birth\, Martyn Brabbins conducts Vaughan Williams’s extraordinary masterpiece\, a cinematic experience that’ll give you chills – in every sense. \nScott of the Antarctic Live in Concert is presented by Big Screen Live in association with StudioCanal and generous funds provided by the Vaughan Williams Charitable Trust.

SUMMARY:Pizzetti - Messa di Requiem
DESCRIPTION:Our autumn concert has a distinctly Italian flavour\, with a programme of sacred music from composers\, some of whom are better known for their operatic work. \nIldebrando Pizzetti\, an Italian composer little known outside Italy\, wrote his beautiful Messa di Requiem in 1922. It is steeped in the tradition of Gregorian chant\, woven into a modern web of sound. \nThe rest of the programme continues the Italian theme\, with three sacred pieces by Verdi: his Ave Maria and Pater Noster for mixed voices\, and his Laudi Alla Vergine Maria for female voices. While Verdi is best known for his operas\, he turned to writing sacred choral music later in life\, and these are three of his finest. \nOur final Italian piece\, Monteverdi’s Cantate Domino takes us back 200 years\, and brings us into the glorious sound world of St Mark’s in Venice in the 17th century. \nTickets available online from glasgowchamberchoir.ticketlight.co.uk and on the door.

SUMMARY:Midsummer Songs & Sonnets
DESCRIPTION:As we approach the summer equinox\, join us for a concert of beautiful music fit for a summer’s evening. \nOur midsummer concert brings together joyful motets from Bach and Schutz from the 16th and 17th centuries with music from more recent times by British jazz pianist George Shearing\, and American composers Eric Whitacre and Morten Lauridsen. After two years of lockdown\, choir members have chosen some of their favourite pieces from the GCC library\, and the all-time favourite Faire is the Heaven by William H Harris also finds a place in the programme. \nBach’s motets are both a challenge and a joy for any choir. Der Geist hilt unser Schwachheit auf is written for double choir and was composed in 1729. It sets words from St Paul’s letter to the Romans\, as well as the hymn Komm Hieliger Geist\, Herre Gott by Martin Luther. There is some dispute as to whether Lobet den Herrn\, Alle Heiden is by Bach\, but it is a fine motet\, and sets words from Psalm 117. \nHeinrich Schutz’s joyful motet Jauchzetdem Herren (Shout for joy to the Lord\, all the earth) was composed 100 years before the Bach motets\, in 1619 and is a setting of words from Psalm 100. It is set for two choirs which echo one another throughout. \nGeorge Shearing composed Songs and Sonnets from Shakespeare in 2001\, and they are popular settings of well-known texts in a jazz idiom. Eric Whitacre’s settings are full of romance and luminosity\, creating a web of sound. Lauridsen was born in 1943 and is best known for his choral works. SUMMARY:Flight of Angels - music for inner peace
DESCRIPTION:After two years with very little singing\, we are delighted to bring you a varied concert of music from across several centuries. \nByrd’s luminous Five-Part Mass was written in the late 16th century and is considered a masterpiece of choral writing. Moving forward a century we bring you music by Johann Ludwig Bach\, a third cousin of the great JS Bach. \nFrom the classical period we will perform a selection of less well-known pieces by Mozart and Haydn\, and by other members of the talented Mozart and Haydn families. \nAnd finally\, moving into the 20th century we have the haunting music of John Tavener. His Song for Athene\, which incorporates words from Hamlet (May flights of angels sing you to your rest) is best known for having been sung at the funeral of Princess Diana in 1997. DESCRIPTION:In April we link up for the fourth time with our Dutch partner choir\, St Joris Kamerkoor from the town of Amersfoort\, to present a powerful programme of choral music by Bruckner and Mahler in St Michael’s Church in Linlithgow. \nSt Michael’s is one of the largest and most historic parish churches in Scotland and will be a perfect setting for Bruckner’s monumental Mass in E Minor for double choir\, accompanied by brass and woodwind players from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. SUMMARY:St Joris Kammerkoor & Glasgow Chamber Choir - Amersfoort
DESCRIPTION:After the previous successful exchanges in 2011\, 2014 and 2017\, the Glasgow Chamber Choir is coming to the Netherlands for the fourth time in March for joint concerts with the St. Joris Chamber Choir. This time the monumental Messe in e-moll by Anton Bruckner stands for eight-part choir and fifteen wood and brass instruments as main part of the program. Bruckner wrote this mass in 1866 on the occasion of the construction of the votive chapel of the new cathedral in Linz; mass was first heard in 1869\, in the open air and under the direction of the composer. \nIn addition to this mass\, three transcripts are also performed for eight to no less than sixteen-part choirs by Clytus Gottwald (* 1925) of songs by Gustav Mahler. The choral arrangements of Gottwald are also characterized as recreating the beautiful sounds of the instruments in question to the unique qualities of the human voice. And in contrast to all these late 19th-century choral works\, the choirs each perform a work by a contemporary composer: the Glasgow Chamber Choir with ‘Canticum Calamitatis Maritimae’\, written in 1997 by the Finnish composer Jaakko Mäntyjärvi (* 1963) with inspiration the shipping disaster with the MS Estonia in 1994\, and the St. Joris Chamber Choir with the Miserere by the Scottish composer James MacMillan (* 1959). Both pieces also fit well with Lent. \nFor some instrumental intermezzi\, the arrangements for wind players from our choir member Frits Gombert on orchestral works by Anton Bruckner. \nThe complete program: \n– Anton Bruckner / arr. SUMMARY:A European Odyssey
DESCRIPTION:Our November concert takes you on a musical journey around Europe\, from a joyful setting of a Galician lovesong from north east Spain\, to a spell-binding evocation of a night of snow\, Un Soir de Neige by the French composer Poulenc. \nFrom Finland we bring you Jakko Mäntyjärvi’s cantata Canticum Calamitatis Maritimae written in 1997 and dedicated to the memory of more than 850 people who perished in the shipwreck of the car ferry Estonia in 1994. DESCRIPTION:CONCERT START TIME: 3PM\nIn March we are planning a performance of what is considered one of Sir James MacMillan’s greatest achievements: Seven Last Words from the cross\, accompanied by a string orchestra. This will be complemented by a Bach cantata. \nSir James MacMillan – Seven Last Words from the Cross\nWidely admired as one of MacMillan’s finest achievements\, his Seven Last Words from the Cross is an absorbing and moving experience in concert\, for performers and audience alike. The cantata sets the seven last sentences uttered by Christ on the cross\, meditating on each to form a dramatic and emotional sequence. \n“…probably MacMillan’s masterpiece… the maturity in this composition is astounding: the tonal structure of the seven settings\, harmony which can be spare or lush without ever being overwritten\, an inexorable sense of the drama in the text\, the balance between voice and strings.” The Guardian \nThe MacMillan is paired with JS Bach’s Easter cantata Christ lag in Todesbanden. Both pieces are accompanied by strings. \nJ.S Bach – Christ Lag In Todesbanden (BWV4)\nBach’s cantata Christ lag in Todesbanen (Christ lay in the snares of death) is one of his earliest church cantatas\, based on Martin Luther’s hymn of the same name\, the main hymn for Easter in the Lutheran church. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a Viennese themed programme in November where we will be performing some beautiful pieces at St Margaret’s Scottish Episcopal Church in Glasgow. \nAs we approach the centenary of the Armistice which brought the Great War to a close\, Glasgow Chamber Choir present a performance of Mozart’s haunting Requiem\, performed at the composer’s own funeral in Vienna in 1791. DESCRIPTION:Summer is here\, with blue skies\, and all its fullness and beauty. Marvelling at the variety in leaf and flower forms\, this year’s closing concert offers the chance to marvel at the styles of different composers. \nStanford:  Songs of the Fleet\nJS Bach:  Motet\, Der Geist Hilft\nDebussy:  Trois Chansons\nParry:  Songs of Farewell\nVaughan Williams:  5 Mystical Songs\n\nLaurens Macklon\, baritone\nChristopher Nickol\, organ\nMichael Bawtree\, conductor\nThe concert starts with Stanford’s ‘Songs of the Fleet’ – the perfect way to set sail – and we are delighted to be joined by the baritone soloist\, Laurens Macklon. These will be followed by Debussy’s elegant French ‘Trois Chansons’ about love\, beauty\, and the seasons. Parry offers us two ‘Farewell Songs’\, after which Chris Nickol plays JS Bach on the organ. The choir then sings JS Bach’s Motet\, ‘Der Geist Hilft’. The concert ends with Vaughan Williams’ ‘Five Mysical Songs’\, for which we will again be joined by Laurens Macklon. \nThe concert starts at 3pm on Sunday 3rd June 2018\, in Bearsden Cross Church\, 59 Drymen Road\, Bearsden\, G61 2SU. \nWe hope you will enjoy this programme with its mix of music and words. SUMMARY:Tectonics 2018 - Miya Masaoka : The Movement Of Things
DESCRIPTION:Come and listen to Glasgow Chamber Choir perfoming at the BBC Tectonics festival 2018. Tectonics Glasgow is a Music Festival curated by Ilan Volkov and Alasdair Campbell\, proudly presented by BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra. \nWe will be performing a world premiere by Miya Masaoka for orchestra and choir in the City Halls\, Glasgow \nMiya Masaoka resides in New York City and is a classically trained musician\, composer and sound/installation artist. She has created works for solo koto\, laser interfaces\, laptop and video\, sculpture installations and written scores for ensembles\, chamber orchestra and mixed choirs. She has a large body of work for solo koto\, live electronics and video. She often works with the sonification of data\, and maps the behaviour of brain activity\, plants and insect movement to sound. Her work has been performed at the Venice Biennale 2004\, the Miller Theater\, NYC\, Ircam\, Paris and V2\, Rotterdam. Awards and commissions include the Alpert Arts Award\, Bang On a Can\, Engine 27/Harvestworks\, Gerbode Foundation. \n“When we launched the first Tectonics festival in 2013 we were committed to bringing the best improvisers and new music practitioners from around the world to Glasgow\, to collaborate together and with local performers and artists. \n\nThat ethos has never changed and this year we welcome performers and composers from Japan\, Lithuania\, France\, Sweden\, Norway and the USA as well as UK and Scottish-based artists. Tetsuya Umeda from Osaka has been investigating the musical possibilities of spaces for years and he brings his unique creativity to a performance in the Old Fruitmarket.  \n\n\nLegendary ‘80s Japanese pop duo Syzygys headline Saturday night\, while New York’s Miya Masaoka brings the traditional sounds of the Japanese koto into the 21st century with a major new work. She’ll also be collaborating with British sax virtuoso Tony Bevan\, just one of several sax performers this year which include Mats Gustafsson\, who will also create a new work for the Old Fruitmarket\, and Dror Feiler. Feiler has written a new work for the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra\, where he’ll be joined by Gustafsson and Lasse Marhaug\, who also has a solo Sunday set. Local performers Acrid Lactations (Susan Fitzpatrick and Stuart Arnot) give a solo set on Sunday and join Joe Posset for his Grand Dictaphone Jaxx\, while Tina Krekels brings the mating rituals of the anglerfi sh up from the deep for her new piece Pardon\, I have tentacles.  \n\n\nAs well as Feiler’s new work\, there are World Premieres for the BBC SSO from Naomi Pinnock\, James Clarke\, Evan Johnson\, and Marc Sabat and a recent work by Kristín Þóra Haraldsdóttir. There’s also a focus on the French composer Pascale Criton\, who brings a new piece to the festival along with her regular collaborators and performers Silvia Tarozzi and Deborah Walker. For that work they are joined by one of the world’s leading exponents of the ondes Martenot\, Nathalie Forget\, who opens the festival with Bernard Parmegiani’s classic work Outremer. Crossing artforms has also been a component of this festival since its inception\, and this year there will be four performances of The Burnt Room\, which brings together dance and semi-improvised music\, staged in the Recital Room. SUMMARY:Sir James MacMillan Stabat Mater
DESCRIPTION:Buy tickets online here\nStabat Mater Dolorosa is considered one of the greatest Latin hymns of all time\, dating back to around the 13th century and often translated “the sorrowful mother was standing”. Set to music by large number of prominent composers\, here the Glasgow Chamber Choir are performing two beautifully contrasting settings from the 16th and the 21st centuries accompanied by a chamber orchestra. \nMacMillan \nFew living composers communicate with the emotional directness of Sir James MacMillan and his Stabat Mater received rave reviews at its premiere in 2016. For MacMillan ‘beauty is at the heart of our Christian faith’ and the Stabat Mater is profoundly shaped by his beliefs. \nThe piece sets the 20 verses of the Stabat Mater in four movements\, portraying the human relationship of mother and child\, alongside Mary’s role as intercessor between man and God. \n“Both sides of MacMillan are to be found here\, the devotional and the painter of bold dramatic canvases – the former in the ethereal writing for solo and ensemble voices\, the latter in the lacerating blows and feverish anxieties depicted in the string ensemble.”  Financial Times (2016) \nThis is an important musical challenge for the choir\, and a wonderful opportunity for Glasgow audiences to hear this powerful piece performed in the beautiful setting of St Aloysius Church. \nListen to Sir James MacMillan in this behind the scenes clip during the recording with The Sixteen and the Britten Sinfonia: \n\nPalestrina \nPalestrina was the most important composer of 16th century Italy.  His monumental Stabat Mater for unaccompanied double choir was composed at the end of the 16th century for Pope Gregory XIV and became one of the most admired pieces of music in the Pope’s private chapel. \nTickets – £14 Adults\, £7 Students\nBuy tickets online here
