SUMMARY:Tectonics 2018 - Miya Masaoka : The Movement Of Things
DESCRIPTION:Come and listen to Glasgow Chamber Choir perfoming at the BBC Tectonics festival 2018. Tectonics Glasgow is a Music Festival curated by Ilan Volkov and Alasdair Campbell\, proudly presented by BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra. \nWe will be performing a world premiere by Miya Masaoka for orchestra and choir in the City Halls\, Glasgow \nMiya Masaoka resides in New York City and is a classically trained musician\, composer and sound/installation artist. She has created works for solo koto\, laser interfaces\, laptop and video\, sculpture installations and written scores for ensembles\, chamber orchestra and mixed choirs. She has a large body of work for solo koto\, live electronics and video. She often works with the sonification of data\, and maps the behaviour of brain activity\, plants and insect movement to sound. Her work has been performed at the Venice Biennale 2004\, the Miller Theater\, NYC\, Ircam\, Paris and V2\, Rotterdam. Awards and commissions include the Alpert Arts Award\, Bang On a Can\, Engine 27/Harvestworks\, Gerbode Foundation. \n“When we launched the first Tectonics festival in 2013 we were committed to bringing the best improvisers and new music practitioners from around the world to Glasgow\, to collaborate together and with local performers and artists. \n\nThat ethos has never changed and this year we welcome performers and composers from Japan\, Lithuania\, France\, Sweden\, Norway and the USA as well as UK and Scottish-based artists. Tetsuya Umeda from Osaka has been investigating the musical possibilities of spaces for years and he brings his unique creativity to a performance in the Old Fruitmarket.  \n\n\nLegendary ‘80s Japanese pop duo Syzygys headline Saturday night\, while New York’s Miya Masaoka brings the traditional sounds of the Japanese koto into the 21st century with a major new work. She’ll also be collaborating with British sax virtuoso Tony Bevan\, just one of several sax performers this year which include Mats Gustafsson\, who will also create a new work for the Old Fruitmarket\, and Dror Feiler. Feiler has written a new work for the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra\, where he’ll be joined by Gustafsson and Lasse Marhaug\, who also has a solo Sunday set. Local performers Acrid Lactations (Susan Fitzpatrick and Stuart Arnot) give a solo set on Sunday and join Joe Posset for his Grand Dictaphone Jaxx\, while Tina Krekels brings the mating rituals of the anglerfi sh up from the deep for her new piece Pardon\, I have tentacles.  \n\n\nAs well as Feiler’s new work\, there are World Premieres for the BBC SSO from Naomi Pinnock\, James Clarke\, Evan Johnson\, and Marc Sabat and a recent work by Kristín Þóra Haraldsdóttir. There’s also a focus on the French composer Pascale Criton\, who brings a new piece to the festival along with her regular collaborators and performers Silvia Tarozzi and Deborah Walker. For that work they are joined by one of the world’s leading exponents of the ondes Martenot\, Nathalie Forget\, who opens the festival with Bernard Parmegiani’s classic work Outremer. Crossing artforms has also been a component of this festival since its inception\, and this year there will be four performances of The Burnt Room\, which brings together dance and semi-improvised music\, staged in the Recital Room. It’s been seen in Berlin and Tel Aviv and we’re thrilled to bring it to Glasgow.” \nEnjoy yourselves\, \nIlan Volkov and Alasdair Campbell\, curators

SUMMARY:Sir James MacMillan Stabat Mater
DESCRIPTION:Buy tickets online here\nStabat Mater Dolorosa is considered one of the greatest Latin hymns of all time\, dating back to around the 13th century and often translated “the sorrowful mother was standing”. Set to music by large number of prominent composers\, here the Glasgow Chamber Choir are performing two beautifully contrasting settings from the 16th and the 21st centuries accompanied by a chamber orchestra. \nMacMillan \nFew living composers communicate with the emotional directness of Sir James MacMillan and his Stabat Mater received rave reviews at its premiere in 2016. For MacMillan ‘beauty is at the heart of our Christian faith’ and the Stabat Mater is profoundly shaped by his beliefs. \nThe piece sets the 20 verses of the Stabat Mater in four movements\, portraying the human relationship of mother and child\, alongside Mary’s role as intercessor between man and God. \n“Both sides of MacMillan are to be found here\, the devotional and the painter of bold dramatic canvases – the former in the ethereal writing for solo and ensemble voices\, the latter in the lacerating blows and feverish anxieties depicted in the string ensemble.”  Financial Times (2016) \nThis is an important musical challenge for the choir\, and a wonderful opportunity for Glasgow audiences to hear this powerful piece performed in the beautiful setting of St Aloysius Church. \nListen to Sir James MacMillan in this behind the scenes clip during the recording with The Sixteen and the Britten Sinfonia: \n\nPalestrina \nPalestrina was the most important composer of 16th century Italy.  His monumental Stabat Mater for unaccompanied double choir was composed at the end of the 16th century for Pope Gregory XIV and became one of the most admired pieces of music in the Pope’s private chapel. \nTickets – £14 Adults\, £7 Students\nBuy tickets online here

SUMMARY:The Tulip and the Thistle
DESCRIPTION:The Glasgow Chamber Choir are delighted to be performing in the historic setting of Dunblane Cathedral as part of the Dunblane Arts Guild’s 2016-17 programme! \nFounded in 1994\, it has developed into one of Scotland’s finest amateur choirs\, with a repertoire ranging from the Renaissance to the present day. An ensemble of around 30 singers\, its current director is Michael Bawtree. Recent BBC radio engagements have included William Walton’s Henry V Suite with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra\, Sunday Worship live and Bryan Burnett’s ‘Get it On’ show live on BBC Radio Scotland. The Choir has promoted forming links with European choirs\, and has recently returned from a weekend in The Netherlands performing with St Joris Kamerkoor and Amersfoorts Youth Orchestra.\nThe St. Joris Kamerkoor was founded in 1985 based in Amersfoort and is currently directed by Wouter Verhage. Their focus is on the performance of sacred music at a high amateur level. Members of the Glasgow Chamber Choir are delighted to be re-uniting with their friends in spring 2017\, for the third such choral exchange.\nWe hope you will feel warmly invited to come to this joint concert in Dunblane’s magnificent Cathedral. The programme on Sat 6th May 2017 at 7pm includes great works by Parry (Blest Pair of Sirens)\, Howells (Take Him Earth for Cherishing)\, Finzi\, Stanford\, Vaughn Williams\, Liszt\, Bruckner and Bach. \nBlest Pair of Sirens is a setting by Hubert Parry\, of John Milton’s ode\, ‘At a Solemn Musick’\, for choir and orchestra. A review of the first performance in 1887 for Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee states its resounding success –\n‘The choral writing is in eight parts and abounds in contrapuntal devices. At the same time the spirit and the accent of the words are carefully attended to\, as befits a work in which “sphere-born harmonious sisters\, voice and verse” are invoked to “wed their divine sounds\, and mix’d power employ”.’ Our rendering of this great work will replace the orchestral accompaniment with the Dunblane organ. \nCharles Villiers Stanford wrote his Magnificat in Bb for double choir as a peace offering for his friend\, Hubert Parry. The two men enjoyed a friendship which had suffered strain. Sadly Parry died before the work was published\, but Stanford dedicated it ‘to his name in grief’ in 1919\, when Stansford’s own health was deteriorating\, and he had seen the deaths of several of his outstanding pupils as a result of World War 1. Well acquainted with Bach’s Motets\, Stanford employs complex contrapuntal treatment of his material in this energetic work. \nThe death from polio in 1935 of Herbert Howell’s nine-year-old son left a permanent mark on his music. Howells’ most famous work Hymnus Paradisi was a memorial to his son that had its musical roots in the unaccompanied Requiem that he composed in the early 1930s. Howells composed the serenely beautiful setting of the medieval anthem ‘Take Him Earth\, For Cherishing’\, following the death of John F Kennedy\, though once again\, the real dedicatee was his son\, Michael. \nToward the Unknown Region was VW’s first major choral piece – a setting of Walt Whitman’s poem – and the work of a comparatively young man. But the music\, no less than the text\, has a transcendent timelessness that relates to any\, and every\, period in life. Stanford conducted the first performance in 1907\, and it was inspired by Parry’s ‘Blest Pair of Sirens’.

DESCRIPTION:The Glasgow Chamber Choir are delighted to return to Millport for another year this October. \nThe Cathedral of the isles provides an intimate setting for one of the most beautiful and moving works of English choral music. SUMMARY:Glasgow Chamber Choir with String Ensemble
DESCRIPTION:With the long-light time of year approaching\, come and fill an afternoon/evening listening to the intricate beauty of rich choral works by musical masters  J S Bach\, Buxtehude\, Michael Haydn and Mozart. \nJ S Bach’s motets\, ‘Furchte dich nicht’ (Do not fear) and ‘Kom Jesu Kom’ are most likely settings of biblical passages and poetry for funeral/memorial services. Both are written for double choir. Using highly complex structuring of musical material Bach takes us on journeys through dark despair with pressing chromatics\, into high realms of harmonic resolution\, hope and purpose. \nJ S Bach was a great admirer of Dietrich Buxtehude\, whose musical career led him from Denmark to Lubeck. Indeed\, Bach walked 200 miles from Arnstadt to Lubeck to meet and learn from Buxtehude. In these cantatas we can see the inspiring musical influences and ideas that Buxtehude uses to clothe with expressive warmth the texts that inspired him. \nMichael Haydn\, younger brother of Joseph\, takes us into the classical period. These liturgical choral works are little gems. Michael’s compositions fall in the shadow of his elder brother’s\, but Joseph regarded Michael’s musical skills highly\, even considering them superior to his own. \nMozart’s miniatures can’t fail to delight with their filigree interplay of musical lines. \nWe look forward to your joining us for this musical feast in the fine setting of St Andrew’s Catholic Church\, Glasgow on Sun 5th June at 3pm. \nTickets are available on the door or online from Eventbrite:

SUMMARY:BBC SSO - Hear and Now
DESCRIPTION:The Glasgow Chamber Choir are joining the BBC SSO again under the direction of Martyn Brabbins to perform the UK premiere of James MacMillan’s Hodie Puer Nascitur in the Glasgow City Halls on the 27th February at 8pm. \nMore details are available here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/events/eh4v2m \n“Musical inspiration comes in many forms. The late John McCabe was transfixed by the pattern of sounds coming from a Japanese amusement arcade\, which gave rise to his ‘musical entertainment’ Joybox. Sally Beamish’s Second Cello Concerto takes its cue from the wanderings of Robert Cohen’s grandfather and weaves together elements of Polish and South African folksongs with migratory birdcalls. Sir James MacMillan’s faith remains as central to his writing as ever; here his motet for ensemble and chorus is given its UK Premiere by the Glasgow Chamber Choir. Anthony Payne’s dynamic and monumental Time’s Arrow from 1990\, meanwhile\, is nothing less than an orchestral evocation of ‘The Big Bang’\, acclaimed as “a work of stunning confidence with exceptional clarity of thought and argument.” Martyn Brabbins conducts the BBC SSO in this concert for BBC Radio 3’s Hear and Now\, which brings together works by four of the leading British composers of our time.” \nTickets: FREE* (unreserved seating) limited to 2 tickets per application (not recommended for young children) – available from Monday 16 November 2015.\n*£1.00 online and £1.50 telephone venue booking fees apply.
