SUMMARY:Summer Concert 2025 - Glasgow
DESCRIPTION:Glasgow Chamber Choir invites you to an evening of choral music that drifts between stillness and flight. At the heart of the programme is The Blue Bird by Charles Villiers Stanford — a work of exquisite restraint and luminous beauty\, evoking the silent arc of a bird over water.  \nAlongside this\, the serene polyphony of Palestrina offers a glimpse into the clarity and poise of Renaissance choral tradition. \nIn dialogue with these classical voices are works by three leading female composers of our time: Judith Weir\, Judith Bingham\, and Sally Beamish. Their music brings contemporary colour\, poetry\, and emotional depth — expanding the concert’s theme of reflection\, air\, and light. \nSATURDAY 7th June @7pm – Kelvinside Hillhead Parish Church\, Glasgow \nSUNDAY 8th June @4pm – Crichton Collegiate Church\, Midlothian \nDirector: Michael Bawtree \nTickets £15 Adults / £5 Students. Buy online at glasgowchamberchoir.ticketlight.co.uk\, or on the door. \n  \nMode details on the composers: \nRebecca Clarke (1886-1969) is an interesting example: born in London\, with an American father and German mother\, she showed early talent as a musician\, composing from an early age. She entered the Royal Academy of Music in 1903 but was withdrawn by her abusive  father after her violin teacher proposed to her. Later she attended the Royal College of Music where she was a composition student of Stanford. Stanford encouraged her to change from violin to viola\, and she went on to become one of the leading viola players of her age. In a link with another of our composers in this concert\, she formed a singing group at the RCM to study and perform the work of Palestrina. This group was directed by Ralph Vaughan Williams. She went on to become one of the first professional female orchestral musicians. Generally regarded as one of the leading women composers of the inter-war years\, she commented ‘I would sooner be regarded as a 16th rate composer than be judged as if there were one kind of musical art for men and another for women.’ Music when soft voices die dates from around 1907\, and shows the influence of her teachers\, Stanford and Parry. \nJudith Weir\, born in 1954\, studied at Cambridge University and from 2014 to 2024 was Master of the Queen’s (and then King’s) Music\, the first woman to hold this position. She is a prolific composer of opera and orchestral works. Of Scottish parentage\, she was Lecturer in Music at Glasgow University from 1979-1982. Love bade me welcome\,  a setting of text by George Herbert\, was composed in 1994 to celebrate the 500th anniversary of Aberdeen University. \nJudith Bingham is an English composer\, born in 1952. She studied composition and singing at the Royal Academy of Music and was a member of the BBC Singers from 1983-1995. Her piece  The Drowned Lovers was written in 1998\, and she stipulates that it must be followed in performance by Stanford’s The Blue Bird\, the harmonies of which form the basis of her piece. It was first performed as part of the Three Choirs Festival in 2000. \nSally Beamish\, born in 1956\, was like Rebecca Clarke a viola player\, having studied at the Royal Northern College of Music\, before focusing on composition. She spent many years living in Scotland\, and Good Wish was written as a gift to the Scottish composer James MacMillan for his 60th birthday. It was first performed at the Cumnock Tryst Festival in 2019\, and is a setting of a poem from the Carmina Gadelica\, the collection of Gaelic songs and blessings collected by Alexander Carmichael between 1860 and 1909. \nJennifer Martin studied music at Edinburgh University\, and gained an MPhil in composition in 1996. She has held many positions in music education and run many creative education projects in different settings. Knots was commissioned by Glasgow Chamber Choir for its Glasgow Songbook to celebrate Glasgow’s hosting of the Commonwealth Games in 2014. Knots is a setting of a poem by Thomas Campbell \, Freedom and Love\, written in 1707.
